Natasha Gray is a Mexican visual artist who builds her work from words. A forgotten definition, an old botanical name, an overlooked expression — these become the starting point for paintings, drawings, installations, and artist’s books that trace how language and the natural world shape each other.

From there, research and observation unfold together. Plants, animals, gestures, and people are approached not as symbols to decode but as forms with their own logic, inviting closer attention.

Her practice was shaped through studies at the Academia de San Carlos in Mexico City and the Art Students League of New York, a long apprenticeship with Spanish realist painter Miguel Ángel Argüello, and eight years spent living and painting in the deserts of the American Southwest. Together, these experiences deepened an enduring commitment to close observation and to understanding nature as a living presence rather than a subject.

In recent years, this investigation has increasingly taken the form of artist's books — two of which were acquired by the Biblioteca Nacional de México through its double acquisition prize. For Gray, the book is not a container for images but an artwork in itself — one that allows painting, drawing, text, collage, and object to coexist within an unfolding sequence of pages. Alongside these unique books, painting and works on paper remain an essential part of her practice, with each medium offering a different way of unfolding the same conversation.

Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries in Mexico and abroad and forms part of important public and private collections. Recent projects include participation in the LA Art Show, where her work was featured by Hyperallergic, bringing broader international visibility to a practice that moves fluidly between painting and the artist’s book while remaining rooted in language, attentive observation, and the living world.
